AGA & Rayburn COOKER INFORMATION

All you need to know about AGA & Rayburn Cookers from AGA TWYFORD the AGA & Rayburn Cooker Experts

Here are the most frequently asked questions about AGA cookers and Rayburn range cookers.

If your AGA cooker or Rayburn cooker question isn’t here please do email or call us we’ll be happy to help.

What is an AGA cooker?
An AGA cooker is a cast iron vitreous enamelled heat storage cooker capable of providing radiant heat, complete cooking, and if required domestic hot water.

What is a Rayburn range ?
A Rayburn range is similar to an AGA cooker but is generally favoured for its ability in many cases to supply not only radiant heat, but cooking, hot water and central heating.

The Rayburn range is also available fired by solid fuel and/or wood.

What fuel types are available with an AGA cooker?
AGA cookers can be supplied fired by oil, natural or propane gas, and electric 13 amp or 30 amp.

What are the benefits of an AGA cooker/Rayburn range?
A long life...50 years or more. Perfectly cooked food. Multiple use. i.e. not just a cooker. Acts as room heater saving central heating costs. Does the toast and saves the use of an electric toaster. Boils the kettle..saves the large power draw of an electric kettle. Drys the washing and thus limits or eliminates the need for a tumble dryer.

What are the running costs/green issues?
Studies show that if you compare a standard house without an AGA cooker i.e.  using a conventional cooker, and one with an AGA cooker the total overall costs are equivalent when taking into account the savings to be made by the AGA cooker doing multiple tasks which are carried out by conventional means in the non Aga cooker house. In addition, the quality of the food produced by AGA cooking with reductions in fat and the cooking by radiated heat from the cast iron ovens is an extremely healthy option.

AGA TWYFORD'S recycling policy- over 70% recycled
New AGA cookers are made from over 70% recycled material, and thus our own renovated AGA cookers have a percentage even higher. Any old AGA cookers that we purchase or obtain via part exchange that are not in good enough condition to be used for renovation, are sent back to the parent company AGA Rangemaster Ltd. for melting down in order to be re-used  to make new AGA cookers.

How easy is to install an AGA cooker?
An AGA cooker is assembled in your house in less than a day by our AGA Rangemaster trained engineers. The pre site preparation will depend on the fuel type chosen, but we assist with all aspects of the installation from start to finish as required by the customer.

AGA Cooker Aftercare

How to clean an AGA cooker
Aga cookers have self cleaning ovens. Any food residue left in an oven will burn off and the remains can be brushed out. The enamel surface is easily maintained by use of proprietary cleaners for use on both hot and cold surfaces.

AGA Cooker Servicing
AGA cooker servicing is organised on behalf of the customer using a network of engineers. Servicing intervals vary depending on fuel types  but generally are every 6 months for oil, once a year for gas, and once every 5 years for electric.

AGA TWYFORD Guarantee
All our renovated AGA cookers carry a 5 year guarantee (1 year parts and labour and 4 years parts only) The guarantee for a new AGA cooker is the same.

How long will an AGA cooker last?
Some AGA cookers that we have renovated on behalf of customers were manufactured as far back as the 1930's so we have no doubt that our renovated AGA cookers will carry on for at least another 50 years. Not many cooker manufacturers can say that!!

Consider how many ordinary cookers you’d buy in that period. The endurance of an AGA cooker makes it a solid investment for your home.

How do I cook on an AGA cooker?
Cooking on an AGA cooker is a very basic and non complicated process.  The AGA cooker is always on; therefore you do not have to wait for the ovens to heat up.  A four oven AGA cooker has a roasting oven, a baking oven and a simmering oven, along with a warming oven.  A two oven AGA cooker has a roasting and a simmering oven.  The roasting oven is the hottest oven, and using the runners which are placed at different levels, along with the 'cold shelf’ you can grill, roast and bake in the same oven.  The simmering oven is a slow oven where you can place a casserole for all day cooking. This enables you to come home to your dinner already cooked!  Perfect for our busy lives. Fatless eggs, welsh cakes and pancakes can be cooked on the simmering top plate.  A kettle can be boiled in 1-2 minutes on the hot plate.

Why does food taste good from an AGA cooker?
Radiated heat from the cast iron ovens cooks the food from all angles resulting in beautifully and evenly cooked food.  Roasted joints remain moist and succulent.

The allure of an AGA cooker
There is no denying the beauty and quality of an AGA cooker with its high gloss vitreous enamel finish and its total practicality in a busy modern world, brings traditional values back to the home.

Why do people buy AGA cookers?
People buy AGA cookers for a sense of warmth and security within the family home, the brand is a British icon, manufactured in the U.K. and has a reputation for quality, longevity and Britishness throughout the world.

AGA cookers interesting facts
The AGA cooker was invented in 1922 by the Nobel Prize-winning Swedish physicist Dr.Gustaf Dalen. Dalen was blinded following an explosion during an experiment with pressurized liquids and gases.

Whilst recovering, Dr. Dalen observed that his wife was exhausted by cooking. Although blind, he was determined to develop a new cooker that would be capable of every culinary technique and be easy to use. He also wanted to make it help heat the house.

Adopting the already familiar principle of heat storage, Dalen combined a small and efficient heat source, two large hotplates and two generous ovens into one robust and compact unit which he called the AGA Cooker.

AGA cookers were introduced to England in 1929 and their popularity in certain parts of English society (owners of medium to large country houses) led to the term “AGA Saga” being used to refer to a genre of fiction set amongst stereotypical AGA cooker owners.

'AGA' is an abbreviation of the company name, Aktiebolaget Gas Accumulator.
